I am appalled that GHD is one of the few major companies left working for Adani on the Carmichael mine and rail project. That role will see you play an integral part in Adani’s plans to exploit one of the biggest untouched coal reserves in the world and export its coal through the Great Barrier Reef, worsening our climate crisis. I am urging you to withdraw from your role and rule out any further involvement in the Carmichael rail project.
 
Adani’s Carmichael coal mine poses numerous environmental risks, including the depletion of groundwater, increased particulate air pollution along the transport corridor and where the coal is burned, and increased industrialisation of Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area as a result of larger shipping volumes.
 
The project also does not stack up economically, pushing against the tide of a declining coal sector.
 
Most critically of all, the world is on the brink of triggering runaway climate change, and the Paris climate change deal struck in 2015 aims to hold global warming to below 1.5˚C above pre-industrial levels. Building a new thermal coal mine is the clearest example of what we need to avoid if we want a stable long-term climate.
 
The Carmichael mine is today one of the world’s most controversial projects, opposed by most Australians. Hundreds of thousands have already taken action through petitions or public activities to voice their opposition. Any company linked to this project will be held accountable by the community for supporting such an environmentally destructive and economically reckless venture.
 
Again, I strongly urge GHD to withdraw from your support role and rule out any further involvement in Adani's destructive Carmichael coal plans.
