I am writing in regards to your potential involvement with the controversial Adani Carmichael coal mine. Specifically I am asking Aurizon to:

1. Publicly rule out providing coal haulage services to Adani for their Carmichael Mine
2. Commit to not providing any capital to open up access to coal in the Galilee Basin by refusing to finance required upgrades to the Newlands rail line

Whilst I understand that Aurizon is legally obligated to consider any application by Adani to access your rail line, you are not obligated to finance the upgrades of the Newlands rail line that would be required to facilitate haulage of Adani’s coal.

If this section of your rail line was upgraded to the capacity required for Adani to haul coal from its proposed  mine it would facilitate the opening up of the Galilee Basin, one of the largest undeveloped coal reserves in the world. The burning of coal from the Galilee Basin will have disastrous impacts on the global climate. If we are to limit global warming to safe levels the Galilee Basin coal must stay in the ground.

Community pressure was applied when you proposed your own rail solution to open up the Galilee Basin and that plan was shelved. You have stated you do not want to be made ‘public enemy number one’ [1] in relation to the services you may provide for Adani. In order to avoid continued protests and reputational risk I urge you to publicly distance yourself from all aspects of the Adani project and opening of the Galilee Basin for coal mining.

There are huge environmental and reputational risks for Aurizon through your potential involvement with Adani and coal mining in the Galilee Basin. Your company understands the threat of climate change, has published reports on sustainability [2] and expressed support for meeting the Paris Climate Agreement. I also note your policies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and your recognition of the global requirement to reduce greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere.[3]

These policies will be undermined should you choose to provide haulage services to Adani or capital for required upgrades of your rail line to support haulage of Adani’s coal.  Any company that recognises the global requirement to reduce emissions should have nothing to do with supporting new coal mines and the opening of the Galilee Basin.

It took years for Aurizon to get paid for rail and haulage services after Clive Palmer’s Queensland Nickel collapsed.[4]  Aurizon should be worried about the potential future collapse of Adani’s businesses in Australia [5] and rule out working on any aspect of this financially precarious project. 
 
Earlier this year rail haulage service provider Geonese and Wyoming ruled out providing haulage services for Adani’s coal. Aurizon must do the same.

Please respond to me to confirm that you will:

1. Publicly rule out providing coal haulage services to Adani for their Carmichael Mine
2. Commit to not providing any capital to open up access to coal in the Galilee Basin by refusing to finance required upgrades to the Newlands rail line.
